Voice Actress and Singer Mai Aizawa to Entertain Fans at FanimeCon

San Jose, CA (May 8th, 2012) – FanimeCon is pleased to announce Mai Aizawa as the opening act for MusicFest at FanimeCon, taking place during Memorial Day weekend, May 25 28 in downtown San Jose, CA.

A voice actress with Aoni Production, Mai Aizawa has been voice acting for anime since 2004 and has worked on numerous anime franchises, video games, and musical productions. Aizawa has maintained a busy schedule appearing on shows like Lucky Star, Air, Clannad, Rosario + Vampire, and Mirai Nikki. Her most notable roles come from playing Natsumi Murakami in the video game animation Mahō Sensei Negima! and the recently aired Nichijou where she played the role of Mio Naganohara.

Aizawa has also worked on a number of video games franchises including Harvest Moon, Suikoden, Super Robot Wars, and the Yakuza series. Her list of credits goes even further with a number of songs in drama and music CDs tied to shows like Clannad and Lucky Star. She will be performing her newly released single, “Kimi ni Todoke,” during MusicFest.

Designer Shigeto Koyama to Attend FanimeCon as a Guest of Honor

San Jose, CA (May 7th, 2012) – FanimeCon is pleased to announce today that designer Shigeto Koyama will appear at FanimeCon, held this Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28 in downtown San Jose.

Shigeto Koyama debuted in the Japanese animation industry as an illustrator then moved onto design work. Quickly excelling, his work as a mechanical and character designer led to being a part of GAINAX in 2004. Though designing for less than a decade, Koyama has since garnered impressive credits in some of the biggest franchises in anime. Some of his most recognizable work includes the artwork and character designs provided for HEROMAN, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, and Guild01: Liberation Maiden. Koyama’s mech designs are featured in well-known anime including Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – Solid State Society, Eureka Seven, and Star Driver.

Koyama has provided artwork and character designs for GAINAX-produced series Diebuster (Gunbuster 2), Gurren Lagann, and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt. His most recent work has him working as a key animator on the Rebuild of Evangelion Tetralogy. Fans of Eureka Seven can see his latest work as a member of the design development team for Eureka Seven:AO which has recently begun airing in Japan. Outside of anime, Koyama has also worked on video games; his design work is featured in the No More Heroes franchise.

Japanese Manga Artist Kia Asamiya Announced as an Official Guest of FanimeCon 2012

San Jose, CA (May 6, 2012) – FanimeCon announced today that Japanese manga artist Kia Asamiya will be appearing at FanimeCon 2012, taking place during Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28 in downtown San Jose, CA.

Kia Asamiya has been involved in print and visual media for almost three decades. He made his manga debut with the series Shin Seiki Vagrants in 1986, and then went on to work on Silent Möbius and Martian Successor Nadesico, both which were marketed into numerous media types. During the earlier parts of his career, Kia Asamiya used his real name, Michitaka Kikuchi, while he worked on anime titles such as Sonic Soldier Borgman and Project A-ko. After shifting his focus to becoming a manga artist, Kikuchi switched to the pen name Kia Asamiya, while still maintaining a separate career as Kikuchi.

As a manga artist, Kia Asamiya has a large number of works in both American comics and Japanese manga. Asamiya’s work includes Corrector Yui, Möbius Klein, Junk – Record of Last Hero and the manga adaptation of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. Asamiya’s contribution to American comics allowed him to work on some of his favorite franchises including Batman, Hellboy and Uncanny X-Men. He is continuing the series Kanojo no Carrera and Himegami Gadget on FLEX COMICS, as well as the monster design for the TV series Kamen Rider Fourze.

Kia Asamiya is well known for being accessible to fans. His website http://www.tron.co.jp is regularly updated with announcements, news, and information about his studio, TRON. He is also regularly involved with his Official Fan Club, providing updates and announcements regarding his work.

Illustrator Mamoru Yokota and GAINAX Founder Hiroyuki Yamaga to Return to FanimeCon

San Jose, CA (May 5th, 2012) – FanimeCon announced today that illustrator Mamoru Yokota and GAINAX founder Hiroyuki Yamaga will appear at FanimeCon, held this Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28.

A Guest of Honor at FanimeCon since 2010, Mamoru Yokota is a multifaceted individual in the world of anime. He has been a character designer, producer, and animation director that has worked on many popular titles, such as Death Note, the Air movie, Kanon, Magical Canan, and Kiddy Grade. Mr. Yokota has hosted widely popular late night panels and members rave about his intricate illustrations and elaborate sketches.

Hiroyuki Yamaga has been an honored guest of FanimeCon since in 1997. He was unfortunately absent from the convention in 2011 but his return in 2012 marks 15 years as a FanimeCon Guest of Honor. Mr. Yamaga has recently been busy as the Executive Producer and Project Planner of EA’s Rock, GAINAX’s first live-action sentai comedy drama. In the past, Mr. Yamaga has worked on many aspects of anime production within GAINAX, serving as the Executive Producer on FLCL and the Neon Genesis Evangelion Death & Rebirth movie. He has also worked on screenplays for Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 and Royal Space Force, Wings of Honneamise, in addition to directing a number of shows, including Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi and Mahoromatic. Mr. Yamaga continues to expand his repertoire of talents with plans to direct “The Rhine Gold” from Richard Wagner’s “The Ring of the Nibelung.” It is currently slated to open in late November 2012.

Gilles Poitras and Ric Meyers Return to FanimeCon 2012

San Jose, CA (May 4, 2012) – FanimeCon welcomes back Gilles Poitras and Ric Meyers, two US fan favorite Guests of Honor, to FanimeCon 2012 (Memorial Day weekend, May 25-28).

Author and librarian Gilles Poitras will be at FanimeCon to share his vast knowledge of anime, manga, and related fan culture. His extensive resume displays a large body of work, from author of many popular books, such as The Anime Companion, Anime Essentials and the Anime Companion 2, to contributor to magazines, including Newtype USA and Otaku USA. Mr. Poitras is also the “Access Services Librarian” at Golden Gate University in San Francisco, and serves as a senior board member of Mechademia, an annual scholarly anthology of essays on anime, manga and fan culture. He has also given all-day workshops for librarians, introduced anime films at the Smithsonian, and even taught a course on the subject of anime for Pixar staff.

This year Mr. Poitras will have a number of panels covering diverse topics. His “Universal Gundam vs. Other Gundam” panel will certainly draw a heated debate amongst fans. For those who are new to anime and are curious as to all that it entails, Mr. Poitras will hold the “Anime (and Manga) for Parents (and other Grownups)” panel where he will discuss a variety of aspects of anime and manga. This special panel is available to everyone and does not require a FanimeCon membership for entry.

Novelist and comic creator Ric Meyers continues to host interesting and informative panels at FanimeCon such as “Kung Fu Extravaganza” or “Breaking into the Business” and in years past has hosted FanimeCon’s Cosplay Masquerade. Outside of FanimeCon, fans may know him from his comics for Atlas, Topps, DC and Image, his sci-fi, horror, and fantasy-mystery novels for Warners, Dell and Dungeons & Dragons, or his non-fiction books about science fiction movies, fantasy films and TV detectives. Mr. Meyers has also worked on audio commentaries, liner notes, interviews and cover copy for more than 400 international DVDs.

Mr. Meyers has held seminars about kung-fu at the TV network Nickelodeon and studios like DreamWorks and Sony, and taught at City College of New York, Brigham Young University, the University of Bridgeport’s Martial Arts Studies Degree Program, and even the Chinese Cultural College in Taiwan. He holds the honor of kinging at Medieval Times and enjoys playing Santa to deliver presents every Christmas Eve. Mr. Meyers can be seen in his new documentary, Films of Fury: The Kung Fu Movie Movie, which was released May 1on DVD, or in two international films, Black Day, and The Suppressor, released in 2011.

Blinded by her agony and hurt, Michi stumbles on to a suicide chat room where she exchanges stories with others in similar situations. After spending some time on the site, she is asked “Would you like to REPLAY?” Michi impulsively presses ‘Yes,’ which catapults her on a quest to her own death in the suicide game, “Re:Play-Girls”.

Igaguri Chiba to Appear and Perform at FanimeCon 2012

San Jose, CA (May 3, 2012) – FanimeCon is pleased to announce that Igaguri Chiba will be performing at FanimeCon 2012’s MusicFest, held on May 26, Saturday evening of Memorial Day weekend.

Igaguri Chiba is the vocalist for the musical group Sendai Kamotsu. The story goes that six workers from a mysterious freight company from the Miyagi Prefecture perform together for a hobby. However, they always wear red overalls and heavy makeup to hide their identity from other coworkers at the freight company. Chiba works in the delivery department of this company and is the younger brother of Nightmare’s vocalist, Yomi.

Sendai Kamotsu announced their hiatus in November of 2009 due to the freight company becoming bankrupt in the economic recession. The bankruptcy story is told in their “Fukyou no Kaze” music video. Since then, Chiba has launched a solo career in efforts to build up the capital to revitalize the freight company.

In October of 2010, Chiba released his first solo single, “Gira Gira Boys”. Japanese for “Glitter Boys”, it exemplifies Chiba’s flamboyant performing style. He then embarked on a short tour titled “”Gorgeous” 3 Point Special~On the Road Until Sendai Kamotsu’s Revival~vol.1”. Chiba is currently preparing for his third tour, set to begin on June 29, 2012.

In addition to his performance at MusicFest, Igaguri Chiba will be hosting panels, holding autograph sessions, selling merchandise and interacting with international fans during FanimeCon 2012. The complete schedule of events will be available at www.fanime.com closer to the convention.
